Honolulu is where you board Norwegian's Pride of America, a big ship that spends its whole week among the Hawaiian Islands. Pride of America is U.S.-flagged with a mostly American crew, which lets it sail only between U.S. ports, so its seven-night round trips from Honolulu visit Maui (Kahului), the Big Island (Hilo and Kona) and Kauai (Nawiliwili) without the long ocean crossing.

Most other ships you see in Honolulu are on round trips from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, which spend four or more days at sea each way, or on one-way and longer Pacific voyages that start or end here. Those lines change their schedules year to year, so treat Honolulu as a Norwegian homeport first and a port of call for everyone else.

The harbor sits on the edge of downtown Honolulu, a few miles from Waikiki. Pride of America uses Pier 2, Norwegian's dedicated dock, while visiting ships usually tie up at the Honolulu Cruise Terminal at Piers 10 and 11 beside the Aloha Tower. Flying into Honolulu a day or two early is the easiest way to beat jet lag and enjoy Oahu before the cruise.

Getting there

The airport is about 6 miles from the cruise terminals, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car outside rush hour. Taxis, rideshare and cruise-line transfers are the usual options. From Waikiki, about 3 miles away, allow 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic.

  • HNL Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Honolulu): about 6 miles

Parking

There is no large dedicated cruise garage. The harbor is downtown, so drivers use paid downtown and Aloha Tower area lots, but most cruisers arrive by taxi, rideshare or a cruise-line transfer from the airport or a Waikiki hotel. If you are a local driving in, confirm multi-day parking in advance.

Where to stay the night before

Waikiki is the most popular pre-cruise base, about 3 miles from the harbor. Downtown and Ala Moana hotels are closer to the piers.

Season: Year-round. Pride of America sails weekly round trips through the year, and other lines' Hawaii voyages pass through in most months.

Embarkation-day tips

  • Fly in at least a day early; flights from the mainland are long and delays are common.
  • Pride of America's port days are long, so renting a car on Maui, the Big Island or Kauai is a popular alternative to ship excursions.
  • Because Pride of America only visits U.S. ports, U.S. citizens do not need a passport for the cruise itself, though you still need ID to fly.
  • Check your terminal: Norwegian uses Pier 2, while other ships usually use Piers 10 and 11.
