Norwegian Cruise Line, founded in 1966 as Norwegian Caribbean Line, is the namesake brand of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which also owns Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. NCL is best known for Freestyle Cruising, the idea that you eat when and where you want, dress how you like and skip the rigid schedule. Its newest ships are the Prima class, including Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva, and the larger Prima Plus ships Norwegian Aqua (2025) and Norwegian Luna (2026).
Onboard, NCL offers a resort-style mix: go-kart tracks on several ships, waterslides, ropes courses, a busy casino, comedy and Broadway-style musicals, plus a long list of restaurants. The Haven is a keycard-access suite complex with its own restaurant, lounge and sundeck, while studio cabins with a shared lounge give solo travelers an option without paying for two. It also runs the only year-round Hawaii inter-island cruise from Honolulu on Pride of America.
NCL suits couples and groups who want flexibility, solo travelers, and families who like big-ship activities without a strict routine. The Haven appeals to travelers who want a luxury enclave on a big ship. Travelers who prefer a traditional set dining time with the same tablemates, or who want everything included in the base fare, may prefer other lines.
The vibe: Flexible and lively, with a Las Vegas-meets-resort feel; dinner whenever you want, in whatever you packed.

Maybe not for
- Travelers who want a quiet, traditional cruise experience
- Budget travelers who will end up buying many extras
- People who dislike paying for specialty dining
- Anyone wanting a formal-night atmosphere
What NCL does best
Freestyle Cruising
No assigned dining time or table and a relaxed dress code across the fleet; you can book main dining times in advance or just walk in.
The Haven
NCL's suite complex has a private restaurant, lounge, pool or sundeck and butler and concierge service, with keycard-only access.
Prima-class ships
Norwegian Prima, Viva, Aqua and Luna focus on open-air spaces, a food hall and more outdoor seating; Aqua introduced a hybrid waterslide and roller coaster.
Great Stirrup Cay
NCL's private Bahamas island gained a pier in December 2025, so ships can now dock instead of tendering guests ashore.
Harvest Caye, Belize
A second private destination on the Western Caribbean route, with beach, pool and adventure activities.
Hawaii year-round
Pride of America sails seven-night inter-island cruises from Honolulu, the only big-ship way to see four islands without a long ocean crossing.
Dining
Included options are the main dining rooms, the buffet and casual spots, and on Prima-class ships the Indulge Food Hall. Extra-cost restaurants are a big part of the NCL experience: Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro French, Teppanyaki, and Italian, seafood and Asian concepts that vary by ship. Specialty dining packages, sometimes bundled into promotional fares, cover a set number of meals.
Entertainment and activities
Larger ships stage Broadway-style musicals and original productions, plus comedy clubs, dueling-piano bars and live music. Several ships, including Norwegian Bliss, Encore, Prima and Viva, have go-kart tracks. Expect a large casino, nightclub, deck parties and activity areas with laser tag, ropes courses or waterslides depending on the ship.
Families and kids
Splash Academy is the included kids' club (ages 3 to 12, grouped by age) and Entourage serves teens. Waterslides and aqua parks are on most bigger ships. Family-friendly cabin options include connecting rooms and family suites on some ships. Freestyle dining makes it easier to eat on kid schedules.
Dress code
Resort casual every night. There are no formal nights; some sailings have an optional dress-up evening. Swimwear is not appropriate in the restaurants, and main dining rooms and specialty restaurants ask for a neater resort-casual look at dinner, so pack a pair of slacks or nice jeans and a collared shirt or sundress.
Gratuities and drinks
NCL adds a daily service charge of $20 per person per day for most cabins and $25 per person per day for suites and The Haven. Children under 3 are exempt. A 20% gratuity is added to bar purchases and some specialty venues. (Published rates as of 2026-10-13; source. Lines change these, so we confirm the current amount in every quote.)
Water, basic coffee, tea and some juices are included. The Free at Sea beverage package (often bundled into promotional fares) covers cocktails, wine by the glass, beer and soft drinks; Free at Sea Plus upgrades to premium brands. Everyone in the cabin must take the package if one guest does, and items like Starbucks, bottled water, energy drinks and bottles of wine are excluded from the base package.
Loyalty program: Latitudes Rewards. Tell us your number when you request a quote so past-guest offers and status perks are applied.

Specialist tips for booking NCL
- When a fare includes Free at Sea perks, read the fine print: NCL charges service charges on the value of included packages, and the perks are counted per cabin (usually the first two guests).
- Freestyle does not mean no planning. Reserve specialty restaurants and popular shows in the NCL app or online before sailing to lock in good times.
- Solo travelers should look at studio cabins. They are priced for one person and come with access to a private studio lounge on ships that have them.
- On Alaska and Hawaii sailings, book shore excursions early. Helicopter, glacier and whale-watching tours have limited capacity.
- If you are curious about The Haven, compare the price difference to a balcony plus a specialty dining package. For many couples the private restaurant and sundeck are the real value.
