Galveston is the go-to cruise port for Texas and much of the central U.S., and plenty of passengers simply drive in. Carnival bases several ships here, Royal Caribbean has its own terminal (Terminal 10) and sails large ships including Oasis-class vessels, and MSC, Norwegian, Princess and Disney also offer sailings, Disney on a limited schedule. A fourth terminal, Cruise Terminal 16, opened in November 2025.

Almost everything heads to the Western Caribbean: Mexico's Gulf and Caribbean coasts, Central America and the islands beyond on four- to seven-night trips, with some longer voyages. Expect a full sea day or more each way, because Galveston sits farther from the Caribbean than Florida ports do.

The island has a laid-back beach-town feel, and the Strand historic district is a short ride from the terminals. Weather is the main planning factor: Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and storms in the Gulf can change itineraries or delay sailings, so travel insurance and a buffer day are worth considering.

Getting there

From Houston, take I-45 south across the causeway onto the island and follow Harborside Drive to the terminals. The port estimates about 45 minutes from Hobby and about 1.5 hours from Bush Intercontinental, longer on busy weekend mornings. Uber and Lyft serve the port, taxis and flat-rate shuttles run from both Houston airports, and cruise lines sell their own transfers.

  • HOU William P. Hobby Airport (Houston): about 50 miles
  • IAH George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Houston): about 75 miles

Parking

The Port of Galveston runs official cruise parking with two options: park-and-walk lots close to the terminals and economy lots farther out with free shuttles to the ships. The port recommends reserving ahead online for the best rates, and its parking map shows lot locations and shuttle routes. Private lots elsewhere on the island also offer cruise parking with shuttles.

Where to stay the night before

Seawall Boulevard hotels give you a Gulf view and a short drive to the port, and the Strand and downtown Galveston are closest to the terminals. If you fly in late, Hobby airport hotels cut the morning drive, though you still need about 45 minutes to reach the port.

Season: Year-round. The port lists spring, summer and major holidays as peak periods, and January, September and early November as quieter times.

Embarkation-day tips

  • Fly into Hobby (HOU) if you can; it is noticeably closer than Bush Intercontinental.
  • Reserve port parking in advance, especially on holiday weekends and during spring break.
  • Leave extra time on I-45 on Saturday and Sunday mornings when several ships turn around.
  • During hurricane season (June through November), watch for itinerary changes and consider arriving the day before.
  • Check which terminal your line uses; the port has four, and each line uses a different one.
