Tampa is a relaxed, mid-size cruise port on Florida's Gulf Coast. The terminals are on Channelside Drive at the edge of downtown, next to the Florida Aquarium and a short streetcar ride from Ybor City, so it is easy to turn a cruise into a city weekend. The ships tend to be mid-size rather than the newest giants, partly because vessels have to fit under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at the mouth of Tampa Bay.
Western Caribbean is the main event, with Mexico, Central America and the Cayman Islands as typical stops on itineraries of about four to seven nights. Carnival and Royal Caribbean keep ships here through the year, Celebrity and Norwegian also list Tampa departures, and the port hosts Margaritaville at Sea.
Getting in and out is simple. Tampa International Airport is roughly 15 minutes away, parking is in one main garage across from Terminal 3, and the whole area is compact. Leaving the bay takes a few hours of scenic cruising, so the first evening often comes with a long sailaway past the Skyway.
