Jacksonville is a small, easygoing cruise port that mainly serves drive-in travelers from north Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. There is one terminal, one parking lot right next to it and usually just one ship in port, so embarkation tends to be quick and uncomplicated. The ships are on the smaller side because they reach the terminal by passing under the Dames Point Bridge on the St. Johns River.
Itineraries are short. JAXPORT lists Carnival's year-round four- and five-day Bahamas cruises and Norwegian's seasonal sailings from November through April, which visit the Bahamas, Key West and Norwegian's private island, Great Stirrup Cay, plus select longer trips.
Think of Jacksonville as a convenient long-weekend port rather than a destination in itself. The terminal is in an industrial area northeast of downtown, so most people drive straight in on sailing day or stay at an airport or downtown hotel the night before.
