San Juan puts you deep in the Caribbean from day one. Instead of spending two days sailing south from Florida, ships leaving San Juan reach the islands of the Eastern and Southern Caribbean quickly, which is why Southern Caribbean itineraries are the specialty here. Royal Caribbean runs weekly round trips through much of the year, and Viking bases an ocean ship here in winter for longer Caribbean voyages.

Many other lines visit as a port of call, and some start or end longer itineraries here, so the harbor is busy in winter. The cruise piers sit along the San Antonio Canal at the edge of Old San Juan, with additional berths at the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande across the bay.

For U.S. travelers, Puerto Rico is a domestic flight, there is no currency exchange, and Old San Juan's forts, plazas and restaurants are within walking distance of the old-city piers. A pre-cruise night or two is easy and worthwhile.

Getting there

From SJU, taxis and rideshare reach the Old San Juan piers in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and Puerto Rico's tourism taxis use set zone fares from the airport. Cruise lines also sell airport transfers. If your ship uses the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, make sure your driver knows, since that is a different location from the old-city piers.

Parking

Few cruisers drive to the San Juan piers. Public garages in and around Old San Juan offer multi-day parking, but space is tight; if you are a local driving in, confirm overnight rules and rates with the garage in advance.
