Seward is not a port you sail round trip from; it is the Anchorage end of one-way Alaska cruises that run between here and Vancouver (or occasionally Seattle). Ships dock at the Alaska Railroad's facility on Resurrection Bay at the head of the town, where the railroad's southern terminus meets the water. The railroad has been building a new cruise dock and terminal there, with Royal Caribbean signing a long-term agreement tied to the project, so expect facilities to change.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Silversea passengers meet charter trains here, and Viking uses Seward for its Alaska voyages, with other luxury and expedition lines also calling. Princess, Holland America and Norwegian generally use Whittier instead, about 60 miles from Anchorage, so check which port your one-way cruise uses before you book flights.

The key planning question is the Anchorage connection. You will almost always fly in or out of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, about 125 road miles away, and the scenic transfer along Turnagain Arm takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road or around 4 hours by train. Many cruisers pair the cruise with a few days in Anchorage, Denali or the Kenai Peninsula.

Getting there

There are three main ways between Anchorage and Seward. First, cruise-line transfers: Royal Caribbean Group charters Alaska Railroad trains that run directly between the Anchorage airport and the Seward terminal, and lines also sell motorcoach transfers, which are the simplest option because your luggage is handled. Second, the Alaska Railroad's public Coastal Classic train runs daily in summer between Anchorage and Seward via Girdwood, arriving in Seward in late morning and leaving in the evening at 6 p.m. Third, you can drive or take a shuttle down the Seward Highway, about 120 to 125 miles and roughly 2.5 to 3 hours without stops.

Parking

Few cruisers drive to Seward, since most fly into Anchorage. If you do, the town has public parking near the harbor and private long-term lots, but there is no large dedicated cruise garage; arrange multi-day parking in advance and confirm it with your hotel or a local lot.

Where to stay the night before

Seward has hotels and lodges within walking or short shuttle distance of the dock, and staying the night lets you add a Kenai Fjords National Park boat tour. Many cruisers stay in Anchorage instead and transfer on sailing day; Girdwood is a scenic halfway option.

Season: Mid-May through mid-September for most sailings, with a few departures at the shoulders.

Embarkation-day tips

  • Confirm whether your one-way cruise uses Seward or Whittier before booking flights and hotels.
  • Book your Anchorage transfer when you book the cruise; train seats and motorcoaches fill up in peak summer.
  • Do not schedule a same-day flight too early after disembarking in Seward; allow at least 4 to 5 hours from the ship to the airport.
  • Sit on the right side of the train or bus heading south from Anchorage for the best views of Turnagain Arm.
  • If you have time, a Kenai Fjords day cruise from Seward is a strong add-on.
