Cruise Price Drops: How Fares Move and How Repricing Works

Why cruise fares change, refundable vs non-refundable deposits, how repricing works before final payment, and what major lines' published price policies say.

By the MyCruiseMonkey team. Updated October 14, 2026, about a 7-minute read.

Cruise fares are not fixed. The same cabin on the same sailing can cost noticeably more or less from one week to the next. That can feel unfair if you booked early and then see a lower price, but it also creates an opportunity: if you know your line’s rules and your key dates, you can often capture some of that drop.

Why cruise fares change

Lines use dynamic pricing. Fares move with:

  • Demand. Popular dates, ships and cabin types rise as they fill.
  • Promotions. New sales launch frequently and can change the fare, the perks or both.
  • Inventory by category. One category may sell out while another is discounted.
  • Time to sailing. Prices for slower-selling sailings can drop as final payment dates approach, while popular sailings may only climb.

Prices don’t always fall. Popular holiday sailings, new ships and the most in-demand cabin categories frequently get more expensive over time. Booking early locks in choice of cabin; waiting is a gamble.

Your two most important dates

Booking date

Some price policies offer a short window right after booking. Royal Caribbean’s and Celebrity’s published guarantees both mention requests within 24 hours of booking.

Final payment date

This is the date when your full balance is due. It usually falls a couple of months or more before sailing, and it varies by line, voyage length and sometimes cabin type. Before final payment you generally have the most flexibility; after it, cancellation penalties usually apply and price-drop options narrow.

Find your final payment date on your booking confirmation and put it in your calendar.

Fare types: refundable vs non-refundable deposits

Many lines sell two versions of the same fare:

Fare type Deposit if you cancel before final payment Price Repricing
Refundable deposit Refunded (minus any fees in the terms) Usually a bit higher Most flexible
Non-refundable deposit Not refunded, sometimes kept as future credit per line rules Usually a bit lower May be limited to same fare type

Celebrity’s published Best Price Guarantee, for example, states that non-refundable fare bookings can only be repriced to the same fare type.

Choose a refundable deposit if your plans might change. Choose non-refundable if you’re confident and want the lower fare, knowing you lose some flexibility.

What the big lines’ published policies say

Each line words its policy differently, and policies change. These summaries reflect the public pages we reviewed on October 14, 2026. Always check the current terms for your booking.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s Best Price Guarantee says that if you find a lower price for the same cruise, same date and same room type on its website or through its call center, you can request a match before final payment or within 24 hours of booking. For the same room type, the fare is adjusted, and if you’ve already paid, the difference is refunded. If a higher category is available for less, you may be offered an upgrade instead, subject to availability. The program is not available in all countries or for all reservations.

Celebrity

Celebrity’s Best Price Guarantee allows requests any time before the final payment due date, or within 24 hours of booking, for the same ship, sail date and stateroom category. Before final payment you may receive a price adjustment or complimentary upgrade (with a refund if you’ve paid in full). After final payment, for bookings made more than 24 hours earlier, the option is a complimentary upgrade based on availability, not a price adjustment. Certain promotions are excluded, and non-refundable fares reprice only to the same fare type.

Carnival

Carnival’s Early Saver terms offer price protection that lets you adjust to a lower advertised total cruise price for a like category stateroom (no downgrades) for USD bookings. The protection doesn’t cover add-ons such as vacation protection, air, transfers and prepaid gratuities, and it excludes group rates, charters and select promotional fares. The terms also warn that moving to a newer promotion may forfeit features of the original fare, including cabin assignment, onboard credit, an upgrade or special deposit terms.

Norwegian

Norwegian publishes Best Price Guarantee terms by region. The version we could review, on its Australian site, limits eligibility to sailings of six days or longer and requires the booking’s promotions to match those currently offered. After final payment, eligible bookings more than 14 days from sailing may choose an upgrade equal to the price difference or a future cruise credit, rather than a refund. Ask for the terms that apply to US bookings, since regional versions can differ.

Other lines

Policies at other lines range from formal guarantees to case-by-case decisions. If your line doesn’t publish a policy, it can still be worth asking before final payment, especially if you are willing to accept an upgrade or credit instead of a refund.

How repricing works in practice

  1. Confirm it is truly the same product. Same ship, sail date, cabin category (not just type), occupancy and fare type.
  2. Compare the full package. A lower fare may come with fewer perks. Value what you’d lose honestly, using the approach in our onboard credit and perks guide.
  3. Check what gets reset. Repricing may change your cabin assignment if you’re on a guarantee, or your deposit and payment terms.
  4. Request the adjustment. Through your travel agency if you booked with one, or with the line directly if you booked direct.
  5. Get the result in writing. Confirm the new total and perks on an updated confirmation.

What a travel agency can do

If you book through an agency, the agency usually handles repricing requests for you. A good agency can:

  • Watch the fare on your sailing and flag meaningful drops before final payment
  • Tell you whether a new promotion is actually better once perks are accounted for
  • Request the adjustment with the line and confirm the outcome
  • Explain whether the agency’s own perks would change with the new fare

What an agency cannot do is override the line’s rules. If the line’s policy says a booking isn’t eligible, the agency can ask, but the line decides.

Group bookings are a separate case. Lines’ public price guarantees often exclude group rates, while agency group space comes with its own terms. If you’re in a group, ask how price changes are handled before you book.

Timing tips

  • Book when the sailing and cabin are right for you. Waiting for a drop risks losing the cabin or fare you wanted.
  • Prefer a refundable deposit if you think you’ll want to reprice, unless the non-refundable saving is significant.
  • Check after major sales launch, often around holidays and at the start of the year.
  • Do a final check a week or two before final payment. After that date, your options shrink.
  • Don’t forget taxes and fees don’t usually drop. Look at the fare line, not just the total.

The honest bottom line

Price drops happen, but they are not guaranteed, and some popular sailings only go up. The best protection is a flexible fare type, a calendar reminder for your final payment date, and someone checking the price for you. Quick answers

Can I get a refund if my cruise price drops?

Often, if you act before final payment and the lower price is for the same ship, sail date and cabin category. Lines such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity publish policies that allow a fare adjustment before final payment, subject to conditions. After final payment, options usually narrow to an upgrade or a credit, if anything. Terms vary by line and fare type.

What is a non-refundable deposit fare?

It is a fare type where the deposit is not refunded if you cancel, though it may sometimes be kept as a credit toward a future cruise depending on the line's rules. These fares are often priced a little lower than refundable-deposit fares. Some lines only let you reprice a non-refundable fare to another fare of the same type.

When is the best time to check for a cruise price drop?

Check periodically between booking and your final payment date, and especially when lines launch new promotions. Before final payment you generally have the most options, so mark that date on your calendar and review the price in the weeks before it.

Will I lose my perks if I reprice my cruise?

You might. Repricing usually means moving to the currently available fare and promotion, which can come with different perks. Carnival's Early Saver terms, for example, warn that switching promotions may forfeit features of the original fare such as cabin assignment, onboard credit or an upgrade. Compare the full package before accepting a new price.

Do group rates qualify for price drop adjustments?

Usually not under the lines' public price guarantees. Celebrity, Carnival and Norwegian all exclude group bookings or group rates from their published price policies. Group space held by an agency has its own terms, so ask the agency how it handles price changes.
